Pure Light

May 1st, 2012

To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Titus 1:15-16

The pure light of the Gospel is of the same nature as the Kingdom of which the Gospel preaches.  It is founded on righteousness and justice, and its ways are holiness and faithfulness.

For the light of the Gospel shines as a searchlight in the darkness, finding the hidden things, discovering the secret things in darkness.  As the prophet Jeremiah said,

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

Jeremiah 33:3

Those who are born again truly have the mind of Christ.  The Spirit within us searches all things, even the deep things of God.

Many may err to the right or the left, thinking they cannot know or that they know something when it is not really the truth, but the writer James exhorts us how to discern the substance of what we hear.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

James 3:17

When we hear a word from Heaven, it is pure.  As a single eye makes the whole body full of light (Matthew 6:22), the wisdom from Heaven is always unfolded, that is, single.  It is a pure light, with no mixture and no shadow of turning.  There is no self-seeking or hidden motives in it.

For the one who is pure, it is pure.  For the one who is corrupted, who cannot tell the light from the dark, it is hit or miss whether or not we correctly hear God’s direction on a matter, or whether the enemy can slip in a word against us.

The wisdom from above is first pure.  It is a clean word, without mixture or uncleanness.  It may not be loud with trumpets, but it is always pure.

It is always peaceable.  It is not for unnecessary strife or division, but while it may do so, it’s goal is God’s goal.

It is gentle.  Even when Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, He did so with God’s gentleness.  He spoke the truth that they desperately needed to hear.  They were already condemned, and more so because they had seen His signs, and yet His wisdom was still gentle to them while He warned them sternly to hear His voice and to turn from their hypocrisy, their false fronts and masks.

The Wisdom of God is easily entreated.  It is received well, it does not mind legitimate concerns being brought forward in conflict with it, for even Moses, after being sent forth in the burning bush, asked the Lord about his own short-comings and failings.  It was only after each of these was answered by the Lord, and Moses simply said that he didn’t want to go that the Lord was angry with Moses.  God didn’t mind answering the legitimate concerns about not being believed and received or not being a good enough orator.  But, God was also requiring Moses to step up, and to not back off simply because of not wanting to respond to.  Yet, even in this, God allowed Aaron to be Moses’ mouthpiece.

It is full of mercy, even as God is full of mercy.  For, to those who show mercy, mercy will be given.  God loves mercy.  And, while His justice must be true, He seeks ways to reconcile those who are estranged from Him.  This is the reason for the cross.

It is impartial and unwavering.  It does not budge, however, on issues.  The same justice is the same justice for all, and does not make exceptions.  It does not give way to sin, nor does it counsel to compromise or disrespect of God’s commands.

It is always sincere.  It adds nothing to the image except what is actually there.  What it is is presented.

When we listen to His voice with a heart like this, we hear only wisdom like this.  For, to the pure, all things are pure.  For, they recognize the duplicity.  They would not be caught by the ulterior motives of false wisdom, for it is none of these things.

And, while we may miss the mark at times, and we have an advocate for the Father, as we grow in the Holy Ghost and to listening to His voice, we are able to discern clearer that voice, even as our hearts are purged of the false leavens of this world.  As we do, we follow Him into greater and greater light, to hearing His voice, and to not being distracted or misdirected by other things.
