Beyond the Limits

April 26th, 2012

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Colossians 2:8 NIV

You see, we are not of this world, if we will only believe.

This world consists of the things that can be seen, can be touched, can be handled.  Hence, Paul writes of the rules and restrictions of this earthly life that we are no longer subject to, calling them, “Do not handle!  Do not taste!  Do not touch!” (Colossians 2:21).  These are the ordinances of this life, and have no bearing on the life of a Christian, having no proper benefit to any man, ultimately.

So that leaves us, of course, believers in Jesus, in a new place.  Certainly, this is not the place of anti-nomianiasm, or complete lack of law, morality, and anarchy.  But, rather, it is the subjection to another law, the law of the Spirit of Grace, rather than the law of Sin and Death.  It is, however, still subjection.

While the New International Version uses the phrase “basic principles”, another translation of this commonly used is “rudiments”, “elementary principles”, “elements”, or even “elemental spirits”.  You see, all that is of this world is destined to perish with the using.  But, we have put on Christ.

Beyond the boundaries of the earthly life, God has ordained the life of the Spirit.  And, of course, there are rules and ordinances of their own kind for this life of the Spirit.  We must walk in love.  We must forgive.  We must seek first His Kingdom.  We must discern the Lord’s body.  But, these ordinances are of a different kind.  They are spiritual requirements, set forth to be carried out “in the Spirit” by a spiritual people, not by those who walk after the flesh.

That is why the hatred of the soulish, or fleshly life is imperative.  You will love one and hate the other, and anyone who clings to worthless idols will become like them.  The life of the Spirit, the life after and in and through the Spirit is the only life available for the devoted follower of Christ.  While it may take some time for Christ to be formed within, we must learn to differentiate even between the religious yet soulish efforts of approaching God, and those that originate and derive their source directly from the Spirit of Christ within us.  Dividing rightly, we are more than profitable in Christ’s Kingdom and are assured of a good reward, not doing our own works which are dead, but doing those works which are from above, ordained by God that we should do them in His grace.

The place of stepping beyond the limits is the walk of the Spirit.  And, those who live there must live according to His direction.  We are not free to come and go when and how we want, for we are bound to the will of another.  For those who want to walk as high as is allowed in the Holy Ghost, beyond all the natural constraints of this life and above all principality and power, must be subject to the power and will of another, the Holy Spirit.

The Kingdom comes as we do His will, and as we are in His Kingdom, doing His wishes, we transgress every natural law and boundary for the sake of the King.  If the King wants that we should arrive, then, at His disgression, as we are wholly abiding in Him, we walk across the water, and through the walls, and perform all manner of signs, miracles, and wonders.  Because we have the authority over them.  Not to gratify ourselves, but to wholly surrender and to follow after Him, who lives within, who loves us and is jealous over us intensely.

In this way, there is no natural boundary, no natural law that can hold us back.  In this way, there is no social or physical limit that can keep us out of any place so long as the Spirit of the Lord leads.

Beyond the limits even of time and space, we cross boundaries, we cross dimensions, we cross every realm and dominion of darkness, because He that is in us is greater.  He that is in invincible.

He is our everything.

Beyond every obstacle that this life can afford, He is greater.

So long as we are in Him, doing His will, and living by His Spirit only, we will live, and see His Kingdom always in our midst.

Only Jesus Wins.
