Flesh

Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

1 Corinthians 6:13 (portion)

Our bodies were made for the Lord.  Consider the parable of the yeast in Matthew 13:33.  The kingdom is likened to measure of yeast which a woman hid in a large quantity dough until the whole lump was leavened.  That little bit of something worked its way through the entire lump, changed it, and transformed it into something better.  What happens when the Holy Spirit comes into us?  Let us look a moment at some examples.

Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man.

1 Samuel 10:6

The famous prophet Samuel told the first king, Saul, that the when the Holy Spirit would come upon him, he would be transformed into another man, a different person, something “else”.  Likewise, when the Spirit falls upon us, we are given a new nature within, a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26).  As Peter wrote, our soul is purified (1 Peter 1:22), and as Paul wrote, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

When the leaven of the Holy Spirit comes within, and we give ourselves to Him completely, over and over again, He works through our whole dough.  We become a partaker of His divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).  We truly can become the sons of God (John 1:12).

Our bodies are temples, made to be inhabited.  It is said that when the Spirit of the Lord “clothed” Gideon (Judges 6:34 KJV), the word picture is literally that Gideon was the robe or the glove, and the Lord came within and put Gideon on!  What a precious place, what a most holy gift.

Our flesh, meaning our carnal nature, was corrupt and could not be saved.  In receiving Christ, our old man was put to death, and we are a new creation in Christ, made holy by His blood.

But, our flesh, meaning our physical bodies, was not an unclean thing before the Lord in and of itself.  In the beginning, God created it and called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31).  Yet, these can be “clothed” by the Spirit.  He can put us on.

Into all of our flesh, into every sense and influence and desire, He can indwell.  With the cords of loving kindness, He can so entwine Himself with us that literally, the love of Christ constrains, governs, and controls us (2 Corinthians 5:14).  For, from the beginning, we were made for fellowship.  From the creation, we were made to be indwelt.

The plan got some roadblocks along the way (Genesis 2:24) as man sinned.  It was never fully made a reality until Christ, although the promise was there for anyone would would do the law.  But, a light dawned in the darkness, and those who sat in darkness saw a great light (Matthew 4:16).

[F]or I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.

Luke 10:24

But, as the psalmist wrote,

My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

Psalm 84:2 KJV

The purified soul can love (1 Peter 1:22).  It is impossible for someone not in the Lord to truly love another (1 John 4:7).  Yet, it is a body fully given over the Lord in love, in surrender, in which a union occurs.

As Hosea wrote of a day that would come,

It will come about in that day, declares the LORD, That you will call Me Ishi And will no longer call Me Baali.

Hosea 2:16

That they would call Him Ishi, meaning Husband, rather than Baal, meaning Lord or Master.

What sweeter union is there, than when God divine descends within the soul of a man.  When that light of His face spreads abroad through the mind, the heart, the emotions.  When darkness is overcome, and righteousness takes it’s full seat within the soul, and the heart is recreated upright.

What love, for the person willing to go there, and to surrender themselves.  What existence, to be bound forever to the lover.

The body was made for the Lord.  Other spirits, unclean, may have afflicted or inhabited a soul prior, but when He, the Spirit of truth comes, there is no contest.  What had seemed like light no longer is.  What seemed like wisdom is struck dumb.  What seemed like love is displayed in open shame, and discarded.  What is left, is an Eternal flame, the flame of Yah (Song of Songs 8:6).

Like a yeast, the Holy Spirit comes in.  As the stones are removed, and as the thorns are kept away, then the Word received transforms the heart in which it entered.

Yet, the promise of the Kingdom is so great as this.  As sin itself could corrupt and infect an entire body, an entire community, and an entire nation, so too, Jesus said, the Spirit could, and would.  As a yeast of malice or wickedness could destroy an entire people if it was let in, so too, if allowed to enter, the Kingdom will make lovers out of us all.

To be wrapt in those arms, and filled with that fervency, is to be burnt alive.  To be consumed, locked away, with everlasting burning.  To be kept, forever, possessed, by the Divine Lover, till, like a log left on the fire until it is gone, all that is left is carried away by the wind.

This is life, though it looks like death to the carnal.  This is freedom, in the guise of the most harsh slavery the human body could possibly imagine.  This is ecstasy, and love, and possession, and marriage, beyond any level of the natural senses, beyond all that could possibly be imagined.  This is He, my lover, and my friend.

Though it costs everything of this life, and it does, He is worth it all.
