The Spiritual Man

February 2nd, 2012

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

1 Corinthians 2:15

The world has not seen, within the space of several generations anyway, a host of spiritual men.  There were of course plenty through history, and there have been great pockets of notable names even in the darkest hours (Revelation 3:4).

Today, the world has had it plenty of people afraid to judge, afraid to speak, and afraid to have any bold opinions, but this is not how it was at the beginning.

 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

Psalm 38:13-14 KJV

A man who is both deaf and dumb is the man that does not hear and does not speak.  Yet, beyond this, as the psalmist writes, it is notable that there are no reproofs, or rebukes, in his mouth.  The condition of the man who is deaf and dumb, numb to life and surroundings, is that of being unable to stand one’s ground and reprove, that is, correct, those who are in error.

While Jesus says, “Judge not, lest ye be judged”, it is clear that He judged.  While He let the woman caught in adultery go, He was also quick to call her sin exactly what it was.  He also could see clear enough that everyone there was just as guilty as she.  Again, by His discernment or judgement.

Paul expounds upon this principle.  For the carnal man to judge is nearly always wrong.  Yet, Jesus Himself said He did not judge with His own judgement.  His judgement was not His own.  So, too, those who walk in Kingdom light see by Heaven’s eyes.

There can be some care to make sure what you see is really light, and not darkness.  There is always the chance for pride and self to come in, but like the man who buried His talent, if we do not use the little we have, it will be taken away.

Paul said that spiritual man judges all things.  It is the nature of man to judge (John 5:27), yet it is a capacity which is corrupted in the old nature, along with everything else.

The Spiritual man sees rightly.  The Spiritual man judges all things.

The Spiritual man sees by the Spirit, listens to the Spirit, and judges only according to what the Spirit says.

To one who does not look that bad to the outward eye, but is reprobate in his heart, the response is different than to the one who is falling apart on every corner only because they are doing their best.  The one had everything and does little.  The other, with little, in their poverty, is doing the best they can.

Surely, the Lord gives grace to the humble, but resists the proud.  He is near the broken hearted, and from those who are haughty, He stands a far off.

The Lord is the judge, but so much as we are in Him, and attending to His thoughts, His thoughts are our thoughts, and His ways are ours as well.  If He is near the crushed and afflicted, and it is His will for us to be the vessel of comfort, then regardless of circumstances, we follow the Lord.  And, if someone is in distress, and the Lord has said not to bless, who are we to raise our voice, our mouth-piece of authority, and go contrary to His desires?

Surely, it is in the Lord to be a judge, and it is when He is in us, and we are in Him, that we judge and ascertain all things.

But, for the one without the Spirit, who merely has the doctrine, it is a snare.  It is not enough to claim to be spiritual, but let it be demonstrated by a peaceable life, a heart and a nature of love and a good disposition.  Let it be demonstrated by abiding in love, and faithfulness to His commands above all else.

Further, the spiritual man is judged by no one.  What gives the Spiritual man the right to judge?  What gives you the right to judge the spiritual man who does?  By your judgement, you condemn yourself as unspiritual.  What gives him the right?  Being “right” does, so much as his right is in the light.

You see, the Gospel truth must be defended, and the faith once entrusted must be earnestly contended for.  If we judged nothing,we would be nothing.  We would be overrun by everything.  But, we make judgments all day long, about what is right, and what is wrong.

But, when we make our every judgement to be whether it pleases the Lord, whether it please the Lord to bless or curse, whether it pleases the Lord to go this way or that.  When we do this, whether we judge with His judgement, His pure words, whether we build up nations or tear them down, as Jeremiah did, there is no blame, there is no condemnation.  We can expel the immoral brother and refuse to sit with the brother who is sexually immoral all the same, simply because we follow the Spirit who is within us.

And, when we come before Him, our hands are clean, for we are possessed of His judgements.

For surely, the time is at hand, and has been, that the saints arise in their authority as children of God, and as the words of the Psalm says, to execute vengeance upon the nations, and punishment upon the peoples.  To bind kings with chains, and nobles with fetters of iron. To execute upon them the judgments written, this glory have all His saints.  Praise ye the Lord!

Psalm149

Praise the LORD!
Sing to the LORD a new song,
And His praise in the congregation of the godly ones.

Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
Let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King.

Let them praise His name with dancing;
Let them sing praises to Him with timbrel and lyre.

For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.

Let the godly ones exult in glory;
Let them sing for joy on their beds.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,

To execute vengeance on the nations
And punishment on the peoples,

To bind their kings with chains
And their nobles with fetters of iron,

To execute on them the judgment written;
This is an honor for all His godly ones.
Praise the LORD!
