Simplicity of Heart

Mexican FlowerDaily also continuing with one accord in the temple, breaking also at every house bread, they were partaking of food in gladness and simplicity of heart,

Acts 2:26 YLY

Of all the hindrances to the spiritual live, complexity of heart ranks among them.  Its used to be, when a church offered a fellowship card, the options were married, single, and, sometimes, divorced.  Today, answers can range from single-parent, blended family, or, as it comes, “it’s complicated”.

The simple heart, or, as the King James reads, singleness of heart.

Jesus said, the eye is the lamp of the body.  When the eye is single, the whole body is full of light (Luke 11:34). That word “single” means “without folds”, without layers, and, by extension, without complexity.

Let us consider what complexity has cost us.  We are less family oriented, and live in fear, both of our neighbors, as well as our world.  We have all the things that make life efficient, and yet always end up on the run.  We produce massive amounts of food, but the nutritional value continues to decrease.

Complexity adds nothing to life. If it serves a purpose, that purpose is done, but nothing more. But, if that which is being done is in need of reformatting, then doing it quicker or more efficiently serves no end.

When we come to the things of the Lord, our own patterns are useless to build. God is able to equip the vessels He foresees will accomplish His will.  No more, no less.  We mus humbly wait on Him, lay down our mind, understanding, acknowledge Him, and He will direct our paths.

When opportunities come our way, and they do, we must take them to prayer, and discern the will of the Lord.  Complexity will add nothing if it is not with a pure heart.

Let us keep the feast with sincerity and truth, not with the leaven of malice and wickedness (1 Corinthians 5:8).
